| i was thinking today in our easter service while trying to figure out what the hell my greek bible was actually saying. yes, thinking. about easter as opposed to good friday and how jesus and his death on the cross seems to get much more press, more coverage, more sermon time, more jewelry tributes etc. But why? Obviously without the crucifixion there is no resurrection, but without Jesus raising from the dead we worship a dead God and are no better that Buddhists. Here is my suggestion :
The cross is seen as the ultimate, Jesus dies for my sins, they are paid for, once and for all, I can be made perfect in Gods eyes. Jesus and his death on the cross is love. but...
Its about us.
We seem to have this fixation with Jesus dying for MY sins so that I may be forgiven. "It was MY sin that held him there", "I killed the Son of God today". I've been to too many sorrowful guilt ridden services emphasizing Jesus' death on the cross and how bad everything that I've done is and my sin killed Jesus. "It is for freedom that Christ set you free", not guilt and self-reflection. You screwed up, so what, I do it a bunch of times everyday, but I know that I'm free and that I'm loved and that the price has been payed. There is nothing I can do to make Him love me less.
The Resurrection is about God and his glory. Gods power to raise us up from the dead. The cool thing though is that the power that raised Jesus from the dead is in us. So we can be confident, and guiltless, and free.
